Bayanihan for Mindanao: A Relief Campaign for Earthquake-Affected Communities
A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Mindanao in the Philippines on June 8, 2026, leaving communities devastated, families displaced, and critical infrastructure severely damaged.
Among the hardest-hit areas are communities across Mindanao, including parts of General Santos City, Sarangani Province, Davao Occidental, South Cotabato, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, and nearby municipalities where homes have collapsed, roads are impassable, and access to clean water, food, and medical care is limited.
Narra Foundation Inc, in partnership with our local partner on the ground OND (Oblates of Notre Dame) Hesed Foundation, is responding with immediate and sustained support for affected families and communities. In this spirit of bayanihan, the Filipino tradition of coming together in shared compassion and collective action, we are launching a fundraising campaign with a goal of $10,000 to provide both urgent relief and long-term recovery assistance.

The Science Behind the Earthquake
The June 7, 2026 magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred in a very active convergent region situated offshore south of Mindanao. In fact, this southeast Philippine region is one of the most seismically active spots in the entire archipelago region. This specific region is where nearly parallel subduction-related faults exist, primarily due to converging motion of the eastward subducting Philippine Sea Plate with the island of Mindanao.
The convergence of these tectonic plates is also being accommodated through horizontal, left-lateral motion of the very seismically active Philippine Fault System, which runs through the entire country from south through the Visayas Islands up to the main island of Luzon.
This particular earthquake happened in that zone in between the southern Philippine Trench (located east of the event) and the Cotabato Trench (situated west of the event location). The Philippine Trench region is where a west-facing subducted slab (a portion of the Philippine Sea Plate) generates a variety of shallow to deep earthquakes, some of them in the upper 7 magnitudes or higher. On the other hand, across the island on the western coast is an opposing subduction zone, where a portion of the Sundaland plate is facing eastward, that actively subducts underneath Mindanao island. This produces powerful magnitude 7 earthquakes (the last memorable one being the cause of the deadly 1978 tsunami-generating event).
The resolved depth of the earthquake is about 57 km, which indicates it happened along a subduction interface below the crust, along that parallel subduction fault, and the sense of motion is thrust-oriented, indicating convergent motion. It is expected that significant aftershocks will be felt in the area for the next few months to a few years after the main event due to crustal readjustment.

On March 28, 2025, a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, resulting in over 3,000 fatalities and injuring thousands more. The disaster has left countless families without homes and access to necessities.
Burmese students at Indiana University are partnering with Narra Foundation to raise funds to support rebuilding efforts in Myanmar.
